TAP & HOLD TO TEXT

Despite its small size, the Apple Watch is packed with impressive functions, rivaling those of the iPhone. Its power and versatility make it indispensable for many users. However, I believe it lacks a useful and familiar feature. See how I replicate that feature onto the Apple Watch.

BY THE END OF 2020...

01 There were more than 1 billion active iPhone users and 100 million Apple Watch users.

02 1 out of every 10 iPhone users were Apple Watch users.

03 “Approximately 35% of iPhone users in the U.S. were wearing an Apple Watch”

TESTING 1, 2, 3

I conducted initial testing on 3 iPhone users ages 24-35. Two of the three users owned other Apple devices.

User 1 (Age 25): Owned an iPad
User 2 (Age 24): Owned an Apple Watch
User 3 (Age 34): Only owned an iPhone

CAN THEY COMPLETE THE TASK?

I asked all three users to complete one task – using their iPhones, they must create a text using the pop-up menu through the recent call log.

User 3 had a difficult time locating the pop-up menu.

THE TASK RESULTED IN A PROBLEM

Mothers ages 35+ are too busy with external factors to familiarize themselves with products they use regularly.

TOUCH GESTURES

Users have a mental model of iOS products as they all have the same, or similar, gestures. Thus, I tracked down five touch gestures on touch screen iOS products.

MY SOLUTION

I created a call feature replicating the same feature offered on the iPhone iOS 5.0.2.

WHAT’S NEXT?

I would like to conduct usability testing on mothers who are ages 35 and beyond. I would like to see if they are able to locate this feature successfully. And if they’re not, then I would like to analyze any external factors that may play a role in why they are having difficulties.
